How to Handle Hydraulic Tensioners in Safest Manner?
While handling hydraulic tensioners you must have noticed few signs printed in the packaging, while they are despatched by the supplier. You should not ignore them as they are written with lots of safety purpose in mind. You need to store any kind of hydraulic tensioner in proper manner, otherwise air pressure can enter into the oil reservoir, that can create really very dangerous situation. Air may get compressed and that may cause the tooth to jump as soon as the engine starts. As a result, the complete engine may fail to work.
Since there is always some scope that by mistake people may store the boxes that contain hydraulic tensioner in wrong manner, during transportation or at many other places during transit. Therefore, you need to follow proper guidelines as per the following instructions so that your system may not end up failing.
Timing belt tensioner
While taking the retaining pin out, you must compress the tensioner vertically or you may remove the pin after the installation and allow the piston rod to come up gradually while you hold the tensioner.
After that you must release and compress the hydraulic element fully and repeat this for minimum 5 times, till it comes up slowly when you are holding it. In this manner, you will be able to evacuate all possible air present in the oil reservoir. This is possible either by using vertical press or the engine.
Auxiliary belt tensioner
You need to release and compress the complete hydraulic element at least for 4 times before installing the belt. Also, you must follow the following guide lines.
- Avoid compressing the hydraulic tensioner by keeping it in horizontal position
- You must never try to disassemble the hydraulic tensioner in any case
- While tensioner is in a position when it is still pushing, you must avoid cutting belt in this condition. Your tensioner may seriously get damaged due to sudden reduction of tension and also your hand may suffer injury
- Observe for any oil leakage from any of the element. In case, you find any trace of leakage, then do not try to install it. In case, it has been already installed and notice any leakage then get it replaced.
You must have noticed the sign “This side up’” in the hydraulic kits supplied by the manufacturers and also this sign can be found in water pumps or any other packages. There is a purpose behind these signs and that must be followed.
